Lamborghini Urus SUV Concept Car Review

Lamborghini Urus SUV Concept Car Review

The new Lamborghini Urus SUV, which is set to debut in a few days at the Beijing Motor Show. The company known for making sexy super cars is serious about making this vehicle, but the usual pre-auto show secrecy means Lamborghini has been mum on details. Luckily, Cars UK was able to get ahold of photos and information on this raging bull before its official debut.

As is the tradition, the SUV's name is derived from the world of bulls. The Urus, also known as Aurochs, is one of the wild ancestors of domestic cattle. According to the Italian automaker, the Spanish fighting bull, as bred for the past 500 years, is still very close to the Urus in its appearance.

Lamborghini-esque performance out of an SUV, because of how much these vehicles typically weigh. To combat the problem, Lamborghini will deploy some of the weight-saving techniques used on its sports cars. Some components will be made of forged composite resin, combined with strands of carbon fiber. This material should be easier to work with than traditional carbon fiber, while still adding lightness. This type of carbon fiber will also be used on the production version of Lamborghini’s Sesto Elemento concept car.

At 4.99 m long (196.5 inches), 1.99 m (78.4 inches) wide and 1.66m (65.4 inches) tall, the Urus is about 120mm longer and 16mm wider but also 30mm lower than a BMW X6.

Why would Lamborghini go from building mid-engined supercars to building an SUV? It’s all about sales. Lamborghini claims that most of its customers already have an SUV in their garage, alongside their Gallardo or Aventador. Lamborghini hopes to sell 3,500 Uruses a year, which is twice as many sales per year as the other two cars.

Facts and figures aside, the Urus is a hell of sharp-looking vehicle, in this viewpoint. As someone who's seen, smelled and touched this thing, it's unmistakably a Lamborghini. The edges are so pointed that you could shave off the panels. Almost everything on this ute is severe and angry—there's palpable tension.
